Why We’re Building a Breastfeeding-Friendly Franklin

In Franklin County, we are building something bold—something deeply rooted in public health and community resilience. Breastfeeding is not just a personal act; it’s a shared responsibility that reflects how well a community supports its youngest members and their caregivers.

Last year, we met with business owners, childcare providers, librarians, health department staff, and dozens of families. We walked into spaces where lactation had never been discussed before and helped shape environments that now visibly welcome nursing parents.

We educated businesses about their legal responsibilities and the simple, powerful ways they could show support. Some proudly displayed “Breastfeeding Welcome Here” clings. Others made space, asked questions, and got involved.

We also began transforming public spaces: securing lactation rooms at childcare centers, advocating for one in the library system, and discussing portable privacy options for public events. These changes didn’t happen overnight—but they are happening, and they are here to stay.

Our strategy isn’t flashy. It’s about showing up, listening, returning calls, and being where the families are. This is systems change—and it’s just the beginning.
